Sicily…
Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean and one of my favorite regions of Italy. I sent my very first group of clients to the island many years ago and have returned often, although never often enough. I am always drawn back by its extraordinary food culture, layered history, dramatic landscapes, and the warmth, passion and generosity of the Sicilian people.
The island carries the imprint of the many civilizations that passed through it over centuries. Baroque towns sit alongside ancient Greek temples, Arab-influenced markets, Byzantine mosaics, and fishing villages that feel untouched by time.
What I love most about Sicily is that it never feels overly polished. There is a beautiful unpredictability to the island, a slightly chaotic energy woven through the markets, conversations, and daily life itself. Things rarely unfold exactly as planned here, and somehow that is part of the magic.
Where cultures meet… Sicilian cuisine
This extraordinary cultural layering lives most vividly in Sicilian food to which I surrender all restraint when I visit...Arab, Greek, Spanish, French, and North African influences weave through the island’s kitchens and markets in ways that feel both familiar and entirely distinct. Saffron, pistachios, citrus, almonds, aubergines, cous cous, fresh ricotta, handmade pastas, grilled vegetables, granita, and sweet-and-sour flavours all tell the story of centuries of exchange across the Mediterranean. At the same time, a new generation of Sicilian chefs and producers are reinterpreting these deeply rooted traditions in exciting ways, blending exceptional local ingredients with contemporary techniques, creativity, and a renewed pride in the island’s culinary identity.
Sicily is not a place that reveals itself all at once. It unfolds gradually through long lunches, vibrant markets, welcoming kitchens, endless vineyards, and evenings around a shared table. Through a passionate cheesemaker at the end of a dirt road, an olive oil producer explaining the nuances of a harvest, or animated conversations over wine long after dinner should have ended.
A warm welcome…
Surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and fertile farmland near Vittoria in southeastern Sicily, Baglio Occhipinti was once a crumbling winery before being meticulously restored by Fausta Occhipinti. Today, it reflects a simple and understated elegance deeply rooted in Sicilian hospitality and the rhythms of the surrounding land. More than a hotel, Baglio Occhipinti feels like being welcomed into the home of an impeccably stylish and generous friend.
Evenings unfold slowly over seasonal meals shared at a long communal table. Lively conversations, laughter, and exceptional local wines, including Fausta’s sister Arianna Occhipinti’s, are the highlights. Arianna’s talented winemaking has brought international attention to the wines and traditions of southeastern Sicily and the Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG region.
How our days will unfold in Sicily
Days at Baglio Occhipinti unfold at a considered pace, balancing carefully curated experiences with plenty of space for spontaneity, connection, and discovery.
There may be mornings or afternoons spent making fresh ricotta with a favorite local producer, hiking through stunning scenery and stopping to taste olive oil along the way, exploring the UNESCO baroque towns of Ragusa and Modica with local friends, visiting ceramicists and artisan workshops, wandering through markets overflowing with seasonal produce, tasting wine with Arianna Occhipinti as well as visiting one of her favorite nearby producers, shopping for unique local treasures, or foraging for ingredients that may later appear around the dinner table that evening.
Along the way, there will be opportunities for hands-on learning, from fermentation and wine to the flavours, traditions, and rituals that shape everyday life in this corner of Sicily.
There will also be time to swim, walk, rest, read, explore, or simply sit quietly beneath the almond trees and do very little at all.
A special collaboration with Rachel de Thample
This Shared Table by Purple Truffle gathering includes a special collaboration with award-winning author, fermentation expert, and gut health advocate Rachel de Thample.
Together, we will explore fermentation using seasonal ingredients gathered from the estate’s gardens and surrounding countryside: grapes, figs, herbs, pumpkins, and more. Along the way, we will also explore gut health and the importance of caring for ourselves from the inside out.
This hands-on session will be practical, engaging, and deeply relevant, offering knowledge, techniques, and skills to carry home long after the journey ends.
